Amarillo hail storm history

Potter County·NOAA NCEI Storm Events Database·~75-day publication lag

Potter County, located on the southern High Plains, experiences frequent hail events due to the region's elevated terrain and the atmospheric conditions that develop during spring and early summer. Amarillo's position in this corridor creates a landscape where afternoon thunderstorm development regularly produces large hail capable of significant property damage. The National Weather Service maintains a detailed record of these events, which is updated regularly as new reports are processed.

Type of damage

How urgent?

Hail activity in Amarillo peaks during May, June, and July, when warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico collides with cool, dry air aloft over the High Plains. April and August also see elevated hail risk. During these months, supercell thunderstorms can develop rapidly in the afternoon and evening, producing hail that ranges from quarter-size to softball-sized stones capable of breaking vehicle glass, damaging roofing, and denting siding.
